Sustainability at PBF

Our Commitment

At PBF, sustainability is rooted in our connection to nature.

From our open water swimming lakes to our woodland and meadow spaces, we see ourselves as custodians of the environment, responsible for protecting and preserving the natural spaces we operate in.

We are committed to creating a space where people can reconnect with nature in a way that is respectful, responsible, and sustainable.

Protecting Our Natural Environment

Our sites are carefully managed natural spaces, including lakes, woodland, and meadowland.

We work alongside marine biologists and local researchers to ensure our activities support and protect the surrounding ecosystem.

  • No pollutants or run-off are introduced into the water

  • Water quality is regularly tested by an independent external provider

  • We actively protect wildlife habitats and natural landscapes

We encourage swimmers to make environmentally conscious choices by wearing rash vests where possible and using approved marine-safe sun creams and insect repellants.

Responsible Use of Natural Resources

Our log-fired saunas are an important part of the experience, and we take care to operate them responsibly.

  • All wood is locally sourced from sustainable suppliers

  • We use kiln-dried hardwood for efficient, cleaner burning

  • We aim to minimise environmental impact while maintaining a high-quality experience

Reducing Waste and Reuse

We take a practical approach to reducing waste across our sites.

  • Waste and recycling are managed through York Waste

  • We operate a strong “leave no trace” approach

  • We encourage customers to bring and use reusable cups and bottles

  • Free drinking water is available on site

We also reuse and repurpose materials wherever possible:

  • Lost property water bottles are cleaned, sterilised, and reused

  • Towels are cleaned and repurposed for sauna use

  • Lost property items are resold where possible

  • Wood is reused to create items across the site

  • Wooden signage is maintained, repainted, and reused

Community and Wellbeing

We are proud to be a community-driven space that supports both physical and mental well-being.

We host a range of groups and activities, including choir, Cake Club, and swimming groups such as Blue Tits, Yorkshire Dippers and Friday Swimmers, as well as craft groups and social sessions.

We employ over 40 local people, including students from local schools, and are supported by a team of 60 volunteers.

We work in partnership with organisations including Menfulness, York Women’s Counselling, and Kyra Women’s Project.

We also actively support charitable causes, donating over £4,000 in the past year.

Respect for Nature

We ask everyone who visits PBF to help protect the environment we all share.

  • No music, alcohol, or anti-social behaviour on site

  • A strong focus on calm, respectful engagement with nature

  • Clear guidance to support environmentally responsible behaviour

All customer communication is paperless to help reduce waste.

Sustainable Travel

We encourage more sustainable travel options wherever possible.

  • Promotion of car sharing

  • Bike parking available on site

  • Collaboration with the council to introduce a nearby bus stop

  • Promotion of safe walking and cycling routes

Local and Responsible Sourcing

We prioritise working with local suppliers wherever possible.

  • Use of eco-friendly cleaning products

  • Preference for natural solutions such as essential oils

  • Support for local businesses

Continuous Improvement

We recognise that sustainability is an ongoing process.

We are committed to continuing to review and improve our practices as we grow, always with the aim of protecting the environment and supporting our community.

Our Approach

We don’t claim to be perfect, but we care deeply about what we do.

For us, sustainability is about making practical, meaningful improvements that support our environment, our community, and the people who visit and work with us.
